With its robust economy, gorgeous sceneries, interesting culture, dynamic workforce, and low cost of living, Indonesia continually attracts both investors and foreign workers. But, getting a work visa Indonesia is easier said than done.
Two Important Documents for Work Permit Indonesia
When it comes to securing an Indonesia working visa now, there are two documents to get: KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) and IMTA (Izin Mempekerjakan Tenaga Kerja Asing).
KITAS is the limited stay permit. It is a legal document that proves you are allowed to work, invest a capital in the business sector, pursue education, and marry an Indonesian citizen. It is different from a business visa, although those who hold the latter may have to obtain a KITAS as well.
Besides KITAS, foreigners who intend to work in the country also need to obtain an Indonesia work permit or IMTA. It proves that you can work full-time. The Region Offices of the Ministry of Manpower is the one responsible for authorizing and dispensing the permit.
Once issued, the Indonesia work permit has a validity of one year, after which the government has the prerogative to renew it each year within the next five years. Upon the sixth year, the employee may now have the option to apply for KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap) or the permanent residency permit.
Getting a work permit Indonesia is a long and laborious process. It can also be very tricky and confusing, which makes foreign workers prone to scams by agencies. It’s also not surprising that foreign workers meet major challenges along the process, such as the following:
- It requires a sponsor – Foreign workers cannot apply for a work permit Indonesia by themselves. Because the country demands companies to give priority to local workers, it needs to prove to the government it needs your services. You need to work closely with your sponsor for this one.
- Bureaucracy is at play – The procedure begins while the foreign worker is still in the home country. After the company applies for an IMTA, it then applies for VITAS (Visa Izin Tinggal Terbatas) or a limited stay visa. Then as soon as you arrive in the country, you have seven days to exchange it for KITAS and appear before the regional immigration office.
